LO4: Evidencing of Focus Group and Feedback
Focus Group Feedback
The focus group that we showed our film to consisted of students from our college, they are the target audience for our documentary and also teachers, so that we would have a range of viewers. Our focus group was a range of a people so that we could gain a fair judgement about the documentary.

Age Rating of our film - based on focus group feedback
Based on the feedback that we gain from the focus group we decided to set the age rating of our documentary to a U rating. There are no graphics scenes or bad language used so it is definitely appropriate for a U-Rating.

I believe our final product meets the criteria required for the brief. The brief was to produce an original documentary short film lasting between 5-15 minutes, denoting the idea of how technology has taken over the younger generation lives. I believe we achieved this because we denote clear understanding on how important technology is in the interview clips said by our participants. We reached the target audience of our extract of our short film, as we aimed at the younger generation, this was achieved by using participants around the similar age 15-18 years to help the audience relate. To follow the documentary style we had informal video logs of participants to help within the genre. Our narrative was based on our own research with searching for participants and instructing them to follow certain rules for our short film. I believe overall we have achieve a high quality standard extract from a short film that I believe the most suitable platform would be social media such as YouTube and Facebook or published online on big televised websites such as BBC Three.
LO3: Applying appropriate visual effects and transitions and Linking audio to visuals and applying audio effects
Here is an example of how we removed sound to create dramatic effect.
Evidence of appying audio effects to the footage.
Here is an example of using using a visual effect called, gaussian blur on our footage.
Here is evidence of us using a push video tranistion in our film.

LO3: Evidence of Editing
The first part of the video about shows how we created the background for the green screen. We created the background using after effects. The aim was to create a background that was brighter in the centre, this was to highlight the people in the video during the interviews. To achieve this effect we found a tutorial on YouTube that guided us through the process of creating this background. We chose the solid cream colour as it is a clear and simple colour that doesn't distract viewers from the subject of the video.
After we finished creating the background we exported it and then added it to Adobe Premiere. We then dragged it underneath all of the videos and then selected the green screen by dragging the effect "Ultra Key: on to all the videos necessary. When the video has the effect we then had to change the settings to aggressive, this was to get rid as much of the green screen as possible, this also gave a smooth outline to the volunteers.
To put all the interview videos into one scene we pasted on top of each other and resized and move them using the effects control. To tidy up this part of the video we used a grid to make sure that all the videos were in line with each other. We wanted all the people in the same shot just to show who is taking part in the social experiment.
To explain some parts of the social experiment we had to write the questions as a title, to make sure this is not too plain and boring we added a swishing sound effect when the title came on. All of the titles came swiping to the right until it hit the centre, we then left the title on the screen long enough for viewers to read the swipe the title back off the screen to the right. When the title came of the screen we used the swishing sound again. We also used the same sound and effects on some of the Vlogs and interviews.
We wanted to show the phone usage information creatively so we used the template of a text message on an iPhone which is one of the most popular phones with the most recognisable features. We wrote the usage information in the message template and popped it up on screen when it was required. When the messaged popped up on screen we used the default messaging tone of the iPhone which again is easily detected. To pop the message up we resized and moved the message using the effects controls.
Some of the Vlogs didn't fit the screen correctly, this meant that without having to crop the edges off we create the double video effect. We did this by duplicating the videos and enlarging them behind the original. We then used the Gaussian blur effect to blur out the video behind however we controlled the blurriness so the video can still be recognised. We think this was a good effect as it main the video have more appeal to it because even though the video underneath was blurry it allowed us to the basic mirror image of the video in front.
Some of the Vlogs were also not shot in the best lighting conditions, this meant that we had to play around with the brightness and contrast of the videos by dragging the brightness and contrast effect on to the videos necessary. The quality of some of the interviews at the beginning needed to be changed as the camera was not correctly focused on some people. This was down to the fact that we try not to move the equipment as much as possible in order to keep the continuity. We enhance quality of the videos by changing the strength of the sharpness effect.
For the credits we used the default title scroll, we used this as it is the most professional way to present the final part of our work. We changed the speed of it so it doesn't last too long but it was not to fast that it could not be read.
LO3: Producing and review our offline edit
This is our offline edit for our Unit 41
The main editing of the footage that we had to do was to edit out the green screen. The effect that we used was as ultra key tool, this tool allows you to select a colour that you want to remove. In our case the colour we wanted to remove is green, and we replaced it with a gradient tan background that we got of a royalty free website. The only issue that we had with the footage was the wrinkles in the green screen, we found it difficult to remove the darker green areas. Hence why in some of the videos you can see what looks like creases on the backdrop. We also had problems with the audio when it was projected onto a big screen, on ordinary computers and laptops the audio sounded fine. But for some reason when we put it onto a big screen to show to our focus group the audio was crackly. However, overall despite these problems I still think that we created a successful product that fits with the brief.

LO2: Following Safe Working Practises
We told all participants and team to read through this safety form so we are sure that everyone know the basics to keep safe through production of our social experiment

- We created a safe working environment by not having cables trailing around the room for the lights and cameras. We guided each of the participants to the stage making sure they were safe.
- We made sure that people didn't touch the lights and was aware of the dangers of the heat of the lights and can possible cause serious burns.
- We had a first aider on site.

LO2: Evidence of Setting up appropriate equipment
We used 3 point lighting for this shoot, this was to reduce the amount of shadowing that may effect the green screen effect when editing in post production.
We also used a ring light to create the greenscreen effect. We put the light to its full intensity in order to get the best outcome when it came to editing.
We set up a table and chair for everyone to sit on in turns, we made sure that the table wasnt move so that when it came to editing the social experiment the table would stay in the same place.

Phone Usage - Participants

Types of Documentary
- The
Expository Mode -voice of God-
- This mode is what we identify with documentaries.
- It emphasises verbal commentary – often using a narrator.
- Addresses the spectator directly, with titles or voices that
propose a perspective, advance an argument or recount history.
- Most associated with Television News programming.
- (detailed)
– Expository Mode
- Images become subordinate to the voice-over narration. They serve
to illustrate, illuminate or act in counterpoint to what is being said by
the author.
- Editing in the expository mode serves to maintain the continuity
of the spoken argument or perspective. - this is called evidentiary
- The
Poetic Mode -subjective, artistic, expression-
- Stresses the lyrical, rhythmic and emotional aspect of the
historical world.
- Sacrifices filmic conventions for example, continuity editing and
a situated time and space, to explore associations between images,
objects and patterns.
- The
Observational Mode -window on the world-
- Attempt to observe aspects of the historical world as they happen.
- Typically have no voice-over commentary, no supplementary music or
sound, no intertitles, no historical reenactments, no behaviour repeated
for the camera and no interviews.
- Social actors behave as if no filmmakers were there.
- The
Participatory Mode
- Involves an interview between filmmaker and the subject. – this
allows the filmmaker to address people who appear in the film, formally –
this is opposed to addressing the audience through voice-over commentary.
- Also involves some participation from the filmmaker as well as
social actors – this gives the audience a sense of what it is like for
the filmmaker to be in a given situation and how that situation alters as
a result.
- The
Reflexive Mode -awareness of the process-
- The spectator is the focus of the attention.
- Speaks not only about the historical world, but about the problems
and issues of representing it.
- Documentaries set out to re-adjust the assumptions and expectation
of its audience, not add new knowing to existing categories.
- From a formal perspective – reflexivity draws our attention to our
assumptions and expectations about documentary form itself.
- From a political perspective – reflexivity points towards our
assumptions and expectations about the world around us.
- Both of these rely on techniques that attempt to jar us, and sever
our engagement with the film so that we are forced to think about
filmmaking as a construct.
- Involves Expository;
Voice-of-God narration; Images
- The
Performative Mode -filmmaker as participant-
- Performative mode of documentary raises questions about what
knowledge is.
- It sets out to demonstrate how the specificities of personal
experience provide entry into an understanding of the more general
processes at work in society.- this is done by stressing the emotional
complexity of experience from the perspective of the filmmaker.
- Stresses the tone and mood, more so than arguments and evidence.
- Films primarily address the spectator.
- Calls for an emotional responsiveness from us that acknowledges an
understanding of the event, more so that asking us to gain knowledge from
it.

LO1: Planning - Message for participants
We are asking all of the participants of the experiment to post a message to their most used social medias, to inform friends and family of their particpations:
"As part of a social experiment I will not be using my phone or social media for the next 7 days. Please do not contact me, as I will not reply or see the messsage. If there is an emergency and yoy need to contact me, then please ring my house phone, Thanks."

LO1: Treatment (Chosen idea)
TREATMENT
THE BRIEF
The brief is to produce a original documentary short film lasting between 5-15 minutes, denoting the idea of how technology has taken over the young generations lives.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for the short film would apply to any genders as it the film will include a female and a male to follow on the experiment so that it will be relatable and come out with a different result. The age however would be applying to 12-40 year olds as this will be aiming at the newer generation that have been introduced to mobile phones and would know the addiction that they come with. The ABC1 would be 90% as they would need enough disposable income to afford to pay for a mobile phone in the features that we would require, such as social media. The C2DE would be 10% as some people would have phones even if they didn't get enough disposable income for other applicances.

SEGMENT SYNOPSIS AND HOW IT RELATES
TO THE BRIEF
My brief will be denoting how technology (mobile phones, TV and laptops) have consumed our lives today and maybe do a real experiment with having two volunteer to go a week without technology and the volunteers document how they feel about it. It will include facts and statistics about how technology has changed peoples lives to make the short film seem surprising and shocking. The effect on the viewers would make them realise how much is has consumed their lives and hopefully encourage people to give up their mobile phones. The short film would be a documentary film as it will be documenting the two volunteer's journey on how they cope without their phone.
CONTINGENCIES
My backup plan would be using the client 'Sheffield Flourish', to share awareness of certain mental illness' such as Anxiety disorder and Panic attacks. The short film will consist of denoting a young teenagers everyday life through when she wakes up and exagerate events that occur in her mind throughout her life. This film would also consist of facts and statistics about the illness to educate the audience more on the illness.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS.
- We will create a safe working environment by not having cable trailing around the room.
- Make sure that people don't touch the lights are they were very hot and could burn people.
- We will have a first aider on site.
LEGAL AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS.
Ofcomm creates the guidelines for content on TV and radio, our projects comes under TV. The regulations are set to protect children so it is important to follow those guidelines, however our project does not have any content that would not not follow the guidelines. The guidelines that apply to us are:
Under the Broadcasting Code, Rule 1.28 states that due care must be
taken over the physical and emotional welfare and the dignity of
children who take part or are involved in programmes. This is
irrespective of whether consent has been given by the participant or by a
parent or guardian. Rule 1.29 states that people under 18 must not be
caused unnecessary distress or anxiety by their involvement in
programmes or by the broadcast of those programmes.
In 2007, for broadcasters on the participation of young people
in programmes, reflecting the need for the welfare of child participants
to be at the heart of editorial and production decisions. The 2007
guidance
and supported the existing Broadcasting Code rules in this area.
Ofcomm acknowledges that broadcasters’ compliance decisions in this
area will depend on the individual child, the level and nature of their

DISTRIBUTION
The distribution of the short film would be the internet such as YouTube, Social Medias and BBC Three. We feel that this is the most suitable platforms for our film as the content on these platforms is similar to that of our film. It is also the easiest to access and would apply to our target audience who use technology and would be relatable.
